Barcelona, 6 May 2019.- Today, APM Terminals Barcelona will start to unload its two new STS Super Post Panamax (SPPx) cranes arriving from Los Angeles (USA). These cranes have been fully upgraded in Shanghai ready for operation in the Port of Barcelona in accordance with the highest operational quality standards of the terminal.

With the acquisition of these new SPPx cranes, manufactured by the company ZPMC, APM Terminals Barcelona now has a fleet of 13 cranes: 5 Super Post Panamax, 5 Post Panamax and 3 Panamax.

The two new STS cranes allow operations with ships of up to 23 containers across the beam. In addition, they are capable of lifting 100 tonnes and can also operate in TWIN mode (2x20’), which allows the terminal to further increase its level of service, offering customers the highest productivity out of all the Mediterranean terminals.

Another unique technical feature of these cranes is that, given their greater reach, larger ships can now operate in the terminal, thus increasing the terminal’s shipping productivity.

These two cranes, each weighing 1,683 tonnes, have arrived at APM Terminals Barcelona after being shipped around the Cape of Good Hope.

It is expected that the unloading at the terminal, installation, commissioning and operational adjustment process will go on for a month and a half, which will make them operational in June this year.

With this investment, APM Terminals Barcelona reinforces its commitment in the Port of Barcelona by equipping itself with the necessary crane fleet to operate the most modern container ships that currently dock at the Catalan capital.

The installation of these cranes comes just three months after the expansion carried out by APM Terminals Barcelona of its connections for refrigerated containers, which have increased by 31% with a new gateway with 152 connections, along with an increase in its electrical capacity.
