APM Terminals Port Elizabeth has taken delivery of four new ZPMC container cranes. The super post-Panamax cranes are all electric and able to serve the largest vessels afloat with a reach 22 containers across. This addition brings the total number of cranes to 15 at APM Terminals’ second-largest facility in North America.

“Our facility planning, improvements and procedures not only reflect the needs of handling projected volumes, but also our commitment to safeguarding the environment,” said Jack Craig, managing director at APM Terminals Port Elizabeth. “Our goal is to have the most productive facility that is able to handle growth for the next 20 years. We will do this by employing more efficient equipment and setting new, higher levels of productivity and compliance.”

In partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, APM Terminals recently has made several investments in Port Elizabeth to meet the challenges of future growth including the addition of 84 acres to its site, bringing the total footprint to 350 acres. An additional 1,500 feet of wharf has also been completed, offering over 6,000 feet of deep-water berth. The terminal also recently added two rubber-tired gantry cranes to its fleet bringing its total to 32. Several of the state-of-the art RTGs use ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, minimizing their environmental impact through reduced emissions.

APM Terminals has also invested in new technology for its gate, along with other yard and marine improvements scheduled to be completed by 2010.
