Peter Smith has been appointed Chairman of British Airways Regional Cargo (BARC), to guide the next stage of the company's development.

In his new role, he will work closely with Pat Pearse, Managing Director of BARC.

Peter Smith joined the board of BARC as a non-executive director in September 2004. He was formerly Chief Executive of Menzies Aviation, a post he held for nine years, and a member of John Menzies' Board.

During a highly successful career spanning 30 years in the aviation industry, he has held a variety of executive posts, including Commercial Director of British Caledonian Airways and, later, Deputy Marketing Director at British Airways.

Peter Smith takes over the chairmanship of BARC from Bryan Bullman, one of the company's major shareholders.

Commenting on the change, Bryan Bullman said, "New and exciting business opportunities are opening up for BARC and in Peter Smith and Pat Pearse we have two experienced professionals capable of taking the company onto the next level of its development. Peter and Pat have considerable knowledge of the air cargo industry, excellent international contacts and proven track records. Most importantly, they work well together as a team and will give BARC and its employees the leadership qualities we are looking for."
