DHL, the world’s leading international express services provider, has been honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and recognized as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency.

SmartWay has recognized DHL Express in the U.S. with its sixth excellence award, which recognizes the company’s initiatives and efforts to reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions within its operations
Every year, the annual SmartWay Excellence Award honors top shipping, logistics and carrier businesses for their superior environmental performance. The SmartWay Excellence Award also recognizes carrier partners that have achieved a superior level of environmental performance and highest level of efficiency.
DHL Express was one of 75 carriers to receive this distinction from the EPA, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay’s nearly 3,700 partners. The carrier Excellence Award recipients were honored at the American Trucking Association’s Annual Management Conference & Exhibition held in San Diego, California on October 7, 2019.
“Receiving this award from SmartWay reaffirms our dedication as a responsible corporate citizen as we support our ambitious logistics-related emissions targets,” said Greg Hewitt, CEO of DHL Express U.S. “Here in the U.S., we have invested nearly $37M in new vehicle technology, supporting improved fuel efficiency, new electric vehicles, cutting edge hybrid technology as well as sourcing renewable propane as a biofuel. We remain committed to working with partners who share the common goal of reducing emissions, and look forward to making even more strides in the coming year.”
In March 2017, Deutsche Post DHL Group, the parent company of DHL Express, registered a significant first for the logistics industry by announcing a commitment to reduce its logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050. To meet this goal, the company will achieve four interim milestones by 2025 as part of the Group’s environmental protection program called GoGreen:
·         Increase the carbon efficiency of its own activities and those of its transport subcontractors by 50 percent compared with the 2007 baseline
·         Operate 70 percent of its own first- and last-mile services with clean pickup and delivery solutions, such as by bike and electric vehicle
·         Generate more than 50 percent of sales from products and services incorporating Green Solutions
·         Train and certify 80 percent of its employees as GoGreen specialists and involve them in its environmental and climate protection activities. This includes joining partners to plant one million trees each year.
