RICHMOND, VA - Hurricane Maria caused widespread devastation in September 2017—particularly across Puerto Rico. As it had for several previous disasters, Estes Express Lines responded to the call from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to supply personnel, equipment and logistical support.

About 100 Estes employees have served onsite for Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts, handling thousands of dispatches across the island. But their life-changing efforts have involved much more than delivering vital supplies from FEMA warehouses. In their off-duty time, many volunteered their time and skills in the communities of Bayamón, Arecibo and Ponce. An Estes team at a Bayamón facility fixed and replaced roofs, and built picnic tables and a gazebo. Other projects included fence repair and fallen-tree clean-up. Estes volunteers also purchased several bicycles for the children to replace those that were beyond repair.

“They went above and beyond showing how appreciative they were,” said Kent, WA, Terminal Manager Steve White. “The head nun there—Nelly—said that she had been praying (for help) every day. It was really heart-warming…that makes me proud to work for this company.”

“Our company is privileged to assist FEMA with Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts,” said President and CEO Rob Estes. “Likewise, I’m especially proud of our teammates there who have made such a big difference to so many lives—both on the clock and in their free time. Their selflessness and generosity is remarkable.”
