High effect in demonstration experiment on AI technology utilization of performance evaluation

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line) has decided to officially adopt the date analysis technology of AI provided by Bearing (See Bearing brings AI-powered operational efficiencies to the maritime shipping industry) for the ship ICT system (K-IMS) to their operated ships (about 300 ships) for the purpose of improving the performance evaluation accuracy. By combining the high-quality data collection technology that “K” Line has made over the years with the world’s most advanced AI data analysis technology of Bearing, “K” Line hopes to realize highly accurate performance evaluation in the fleet.

“K” Line believes that accurate evaluation of the operational performance of the vessel in the actual sea area is an indispensable element for conducting economic operations and environmental measures. With the development of IoT technology, it is still possible to evaluate operational performance with a certain accuracy by using big data obtained in real time, but further improvement in accuracy is an issue in the shipping, shipbuilding, and marine equipment industries.

For many years, “K” Line has focused on “collection of high-quality data” and “advanced data analysis technology” and has made various efforts to improve the accuracy of performance evaluation technology. As a part of this, from the end of 2019, we have conducted a demonstration experiment on verification and evaluation of data analysis technology of AI provided by Bearing. As a result, “K” Line has confirmed that it is possible to evaluate operational performance with extremely high accuracy compared with existing performance evaluation technology. Through the verification, they have obtained remark from Bearing that their operational data, which is the basis of AI learning, is extremely high quality, and which leads to highly accurate analysis results and they believe that this is a technology that can truly utilize their long-standing efforts.

In the future, by utilizing Bearing‘s technology, “K” Line will not only accurately grasp the operational performance of each vessel operating in the actual sea area and use it for operational management, but also accurately evaluate various fuel reduction efforts. “K” Line would like to further improve the performance of our ships and the operational management and believes that promoting DX by utilizing big data and AI technology will lead to the pursuit of ship safety and economy, and the creation of innovation in the maritime industry for environmental initiatives.

“K” Line will pursue ship safety, contribution to the environment, and economic rationality through the use of data in order to realize the “Strategic Growth Areas - Safety, Environment and Quality Initiatives” set forth in its management plan.
