The logistics company Gebrüder Weiss is setting store by environmentally friendly transport solutions. A gas-powered truck has been in operation in Memmingen since June 3, which runs daily between Memmingen and Augsburg (day-time transport) and between Memmingen and Nuremberg (night-time transport). “Gebrüder Weiss is committed to sustainability – and of course to minimizing the amount of pollution emitted,” says Frank Herzog, Branch Manager in Memmingen. Purchasing a gas-powered swap body vehicle represents a further step being taken towards using environmentally friendly transport solutions.
The aim is to save around 20 tons of CO2 each year by using the new vehicle alone. Nitrogen oxide emissions are 70 percent below the limit for Euro 6 diesel. The range is between 1,200 and 1,500 kilometers, which corresponds roughly to the distance covered by a diesel-powered truck. The current route, on which groupage freight is transported to Augsburg or Nuremberg, is ideally suited for the gas-powered swap body vehicle due to its range and limited refueling options.
At Gebrüder Weiss, two gas-powered trucks are currently in operation – in addition to the swap body vehicle in Memmingen, a semitrailer vehicle is on the road in the greater Vienna area. A third truck will soon be transporting goods from a major customer between Vienna and Kruševac (Serbia), and a fully electric truck has also been undergoing testing in the greater Vienna area since September 2018. This primarily concerns electrification of urban distribution traffic, where zero-emission targets and low noise pollution play an important role. The findings obtained here in the test phase are then incorporated into the vehicle’s subsequent development stages.
