The Little Rock Port Authority ended the first quarter of 2021 with significant improvement in both river and rail activity.
LSI, the Port’s stevedore partner, worked 47 barges on the docks containing more than 71,000 tons of cargo. Commodities handled included aluminum sows, nepheline syenite, potash, rock, steel coils, wetcake, and wire rod coils. LSI worked 89 total barges holding more than 134,000 tons during the quarter. This was down from 103 barges worked for the same period in 2020. April activity looks to be slower as limited empty availability have outbound loadings running two weeks behind initial schedule.
Miscellaneous switching included 32 loaded rail cars being removed from lease tracks to customers to be offloaded. The Port continues to hold 180 cars in storage.
Terminal activity was strong with 46 railcars transloaded during the month. Truck activity was the busiest in the last six-month period and warehousing operations are very busy as well. LSI expects outbound loadings to stay strong through May and predict inbound barge activity pick back up.
“We are excited to see the increased activity among the businesses in the Port of Little Rock,” said Bryan Day, executive director of the Little Rock Port Authority. “As we see more people continuing to get the COVID-19 vaccine, we are seeing a strong correlation with increased business activity. Hopefully, business will continue to grow stronger as more get the shot.”
