Learn how to apply for stormwater, water quality funding on April 25

The Port of Long Beach is hosting a workshop this month for local groups seeking grants to fund stormwater and water quality projects that improve the waters of San Pedro Bay.

A presentation for potential applicants will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the first-floor Board Room of the Port Interim Administrative Offices, 4801 Airport Plaza Drive, Long Beach 90815.

The Port has allocated $3 million for the Community Grants Program this year. Overall, the Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved $46 million for the program, which is designed to help those in the community who are most vulnerable to port-related impacts.

So far, $3.7 million has been awarded under the Port’s Community Grants Program. Including money awarded under a previous grant program, the Port of Long Beach has given $22 million for community mitigation and committed almost $65 million, more than any seaport in the nation.

Eligible projects for the 2018 solicitation include:

  • Projects that enhance water quality, flood management, water supply and other benefits such as better air quality, enhanced recreational opportunities, reduction of urban “heat island” effects, etc.
  • Stormwater infiltration and retention
  • Stormwater capture and reuse
  • Conventional stormwater treatment

While groups anywhere in the city of Long Beach are available for grant funding, a priority will be given for projects downtown and in areas extending north along Interstate 710, including parts of Wilmington, Carson, Compton and Paramount.
