July was a record-breaking month at the Port of New York and New Jersey. With a total volume of 806,015 TEUs (440,952 containers), it was the busiest July in the port’s history and its seventh busiest month ever. Total volume rose 11.1 percent from last year’s 725,479 TEUs (400,470 containers), bringing our year-through July total to 5,016,626 TEUs (2,777,040 containers).
Imports (TEUs) also increased significantly in July, rising by 13.5 percent from July 2023. A total of 422,212 TEUs (231,424 containers) were recorded in July versus 372,139 TEUs (205,605 containers) the previous year. From January through July, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,580,267 TEUs (1,431,207 containers), a 13.7 percent increase over the 2,269,635 TEUs (1,262,145 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023.
Export empties totaled 269,026 TEUs in July 2024 compared to 251,140 TEUs in July 2023, a 7.1 percent increase. From January through July, 1,625,574 export empties moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, an increase of 13.5 percent from the 1,432,769 TEUs recorded in the same period of 2023. Import empties rose by 26.9 percent from January through July versus the previous year.
Rail volume also saw gains in July, increasing by 2.6 percent from the previous year’s July figure with a total of 56,525 containers. Rail volume from January through July 2024 was 4.5 percent greater than in the same period of 2023.
A total of 38,367 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in July, a decrease of 2.5 percent when compared to July 2023. Auto volume for January through July 2024 remained strong, with an 8.5 percent increase compared to 2023’s figure.
