PortMiami reported its busiest January in history with a total of 104,183 twenty-foot equivalent units of containerized cargo (TEUs) activity, a 17% jump over January 2018 – a record month in its history. The seaport’s fiscal year runs Oct. 1 - Sept. 30.
Port officials attribute January’s results to be a continuation of a healthy balance of global trade combined with successfully deployed capital infrastructure improvements and a port team dedicated to its customers.
Last fiscal year PortMiami handled nearly 1.1 million TEUs. It has serviced more than 270 post-Panamax vessels since its channel deepening to -50/-52 feet in 2015. Completed improvements to enhance big ship operations and trade connectivity include a direct access tunnel to the U.S. Interstate Highway System, on-dock rail and Super-post Panamax cranes.
PortMiami’s cargo partners have also made significant infrastructure investments on port.
Seaboard Marine recently opened a new 15,000 square ft. maintenance and repair building offering enhancements to increase cargo handling capabilities as well as the maintenance of its equipment fleet.
Last month South Florida Container Terminal also launched a new cargo yard densification project to increase its operational capacity and container throughput.
As it solidifies its relationship with Maersk and MSC shipping lines, Port of Miami Terminal Operating Company keeps improving by investing in new container handling equipment and technological capabilities.
“PortMiami is experiencing tremendous growth,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “Its January container volumes, with nearly 104,200 TEUs, is a record achievement. The Port team and its partners are experiencing the results of excellent service coupled with continued infrastructure improvements, offering cargo lines and shippers fast and reliable service.”
“PortMiami and its partners continue their contributions to the economic development of not only Miami-Dade County, but also to the state of Florida,” said Chairwoman of the Tourism and Ports Committee Rebeca Sosa. “It plays an essential role in the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. We pledge to continue this collaboration with our partners in order to deliver the best service in the industry.”
“January’s total of 104,183 TEUs represents the Port’s highest monthly amount ever, exceeding the previous mark of 100,758 TEUs in August 2018,” said PortMiami Director and CEO Juan M. Kuryla. “This progress is the result of the hard work and dedication of our Mayor, Commissioners, partners and port team. PortMiami’s continued growth would not be possible without them.”
