JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - Saia, Inc. (NASDAQ:SAIA) announced today that Saia LTL Freight has joined CargoNet to reinforce its efforts combating freight theft. CargoNet uses “a unique layered approach to cargo security with proactive deterrence and prevention methods, extensive recovery assistance, (and) coordinated theft communications, combined with education, awareness and cargo theft trend analytics.” CargoNet is a Verisk business.

At its core, CargoNet provides transportation companies like Saia with the opportunity to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of cargo theft, a better chance at recovering stolen freight, and demonstrates the carrier’s commitment to security and safety.

“Joining CargoNet further enhances our robust security program, which creates a tremendous value proposition,” explained Saia Director of Corporate Security James McDonald. “The investment in CargoNet reflects Saia’s ongoing commitment to protecting the supply chain and, most importantly, our customers’ freight.”

According to CargoNet, cargo theft remains a major problem for transportation companies and shippers alike. Last year, nearly 750 thefts were reported in the U.S. and Canada with an average value loss of over $196,000 – a total of nearly $145 million in stolen cargo. Additionally, over 1,400 tractors, trailers or intermodal chassis and containers were taken during the year.

“Saia’s inclusion of the CargoNet program and commitment to cargo security is a great new addition for all of our members that participate on the CargoNet platform,” said Ryan Shepherd, general manager of Verisk Supply Chain Solutions. “Cargo theft is a complex issue that has many facets, and it is a testament to Saia and their leadership team, that they see the value in sharing data securely across the CargoNet platform and are willing to work towards a solution in a collaborative manner.”

“Cargo theft puts carriers, shippers and consumers all at risk,” said McDonald. “We remain vigilant and look forward to working with CargoNet.”
