This month, North America's freight railroads celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Staggers Rail Act of 1980 and its pivotal role in creating an environment that has benefited consumers, rail customers and the industry.

Skeptics predicted that partial deregulation of the rail industry would mean higher rates for shippers. But they were wrong. And Congress was right.

Staggers sparked a rail renaissance in North America, allowing railroads to become more competitive and responsive to their customers. As a result, America's freight rail system is stronger, safer and more efficient than ever.

Going forward, it is important that Congress continues to allow the rail industry to respond to the marketplace and generate the capital necessary to meet the growing demands of freight rail transportation.
