Big Data prize awarded to Greek companies that have exemplified benefits of digital technology deployed within shipping

Athens, Greece - Today, The Signal Group announces it has been awarded the Lloyd’s List Intelligence Big Data Award at the 2018 Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards for its Signal Ocean Platform, which aims to significantly improve the competitive performance of the shipping community through the smarter collection, interpretation and application of data.

Now in their 15th year and the most popular event of its kind within the shipping industry, the Greek Shipping Awards provide well-deserved recognition of many different types of achievement across the maritime industry. At a gala presentation dinner held in Athens on Friday 7 December, Signal Ocean took home the prestigious Lloyd’s List Intelligence (LLI) Big Data Award, a prize judged by experts from Lloyd’s List Intelligence, a specialist business information service dedicated to the global maritime community.

The Signal Ocean Platform allows charterers, brokers and shipowners to securely collect, aggregate, analyse and interrogate a complex array of private and public shipping data. Powered by sophisticated machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies, the platform processes the available data to deliver customised, exclusive insights for smarter, faster and more-informed decision-making. Presented on a dashboard, users can also gain a real-time view of market conditions and developments, including current and future voyages, recent fixtures and short-term predictions of availability and relative profitability of vessels participating in the global spot shipping markets.

Ioannis Martinos, CEO of The Signal Group, commented on the win: “Our mission at Signal Ocean is to find meaningful and relevant ways to bring technology into the shipping industry. We have done this by creating a platform that can benefit all stakeholders in the supply chain. By embracing easy-to-use, shipping savvy technology, charterers, brokers and shipowners can significantly improve their commercial performance and run a tighter, more efficient ship – both metaphorically and quite literally.”

Nigel Lowry, director of the Greek Shipping Awards for Lloyd’s List added: “Congratulations to Signal Ocean on this very well-deserved award, for which there was some serious competition this year. Over the past few years, The Signal Group has proven itself to be an innovative leader in the shipping industry, and a company that is not shy about testing new ideas. This award is a testament to that mentality, and we look forward to seeing how the company progresses in the future.”
