Beyond the Coast: Port of Stockton Powers the Central Valley’s Global Reach

Sep 15, 2026

The Stockton Port District, commonly known as the Port of Stockton, is a unique inland port located on the Delta of the San Joaquin River in California’s agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. As a public entity and California special district, the Port provides flexible domestic and international distribution by ship, rail, and truck, connecting businesses to regional, national, and global markets.

With seven million square feet of warehouse , state-of-the-art cargo-handling equipment, and more than 400 acres available for new development, the Port is well positioned to meet growing demand for shipping and logistics services. Its inland location offers reduced congestion compared with coastal ports while maintaining direct access to California’s extensive transportation network.

In 2025, the Port handled 3.2 million tons of cargo, including dry bulk, liquid bulk, and general cargo such as steel coils, beams, supersacks, and project cargo. This diversified capability supports industries including agriculture, construction, manufacturing, energy, and recycling. Specialized facilities and equipment allow the Port to efficiently manage both routine shipments and complex project cargo requiring customized logistics solutions.

The Port’s skilled workforce includes 150 registered union members with extensive experience in breakbulk and project cargo operations. Combined with modern equipment and a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence, this expertise supports reliable cargo handling and efficient vessel turnaround.

The Port also provides flexible truck and rail options. Located adjacent to Interstate 5, the major north-south corridor serving California, Oregon, and Washington, it is dual-served by Class I railroads BNSF Railway and Union Pacific. This multimodal connectivity enables efficient movement throughout the western United States, helping businesses reduce transportation costs, strengthen supply chain reliability, and access domestic and international markets.

The Port of Stockton serves as the Northern California logistics hub for general cargo – from steel to project cargo, the Port of Stockton has handled it all.
