Ports America Chesapeake, terminal operator of the Port of Baltimore’s Seagirt Marine Terminal, recently announced the expansion of its partnership with Norfolk Southern Corporation to offer on-dock intermodal rail service at Seagirt starting today, May 26th.
The new on-dock loading will offer enhanced services for Norfolk Southern’s international customers, shifting its international intermodal business from their Bay View yard operation to Seagirt Marine Terminal.
For Port of Baltimore, which handled a record-breaking 43.6 million tons of international cargo in 2019, and Seagirt Marine Terminal, the new service will support the on-going growth of the port.
“We are continuing to prepare for the needs and demands of tomorrow,” said Ports America Chesapeake Vice President Bayard Hogans. “Ports America Chesapeake is committed to continued expansion to support the growth of the Port of Baltimore and Seagirt Marine Terminal. Norfolk Southern has been a Port of Baltimore partner for many years and with the move to provide on-dock international intermodal service to Seagirt, the partnership continues to grow.”
Norfolk Southern is a major transporter of industrial products, including chemicals, agriculture, metals and construction materials and is a principal carrier of coal, automobiles, and automotive parts. The railway company operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East, including 233 miles of track operated throughout Maryland.
“Norfolk Southern is excited to expand our relationship with Ports America and the Port of Baltimore. We look forward to future growth in Baltimore,” said Norfolk Southern Group Manager Randy Bayles.
